Click on the thumbnail to view larger image   2011 RJW Distinguished Professor Dr Andrew Warshaw, MD, FACS Dr Andrew Warshaw, MD, FACS was the 2011 RJW Distinguished Professor. He travelled to Kenya accompanied by Dr Hayanga and gave Grand Rounds in Nairobi on October 6th 2011 at the Aga Khan University Teaching Hospital to a capacity crowd. His talk was entitled " Extending Horozons." Dr Warshaw is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School and trained in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also spent two years as a clinical associate in the Section on Gastroenterology of the National Institutes of Health and was a research fellow in medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Since 1972, he has been on the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital and on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. In 1987, he became professor of surgery at Harvard and in 1997, the W. Gerald Austen Professor of Surgery, surgeon-in-chief and chairman of the department of surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Warshaw has been president of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the International Association of Pancreatology, the Massachusetts Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the New England Surgical Society, the Halsted Society, the Boston Surgical Society, the Society of Surgical Chairs, and the American Pancreatic Association. He was a director of the American Board of Surgery and its chairman in 1993. He has served as a governor of the ACS and chair of its Socioeconomic Issues Committee. He has been first vice president of the ACS, a member of its Health Policy Steering Committee, and chair of the board of directors of the ACS Professional Association/Political Action Committee. In 2007, he was appointed treasurer of the ACS. He also chairs the ACS Health Policy and Advocacy Group. Dr. Warshaw has made important contributions to the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammatory and malignant lesions of the pancreas. His bibliography lists nearly 400 original reports as well as 240 book chapters, reviews, and monographs and 13 books. He is editor-in-chief of the journal SURGERY
