Perpetuating a Vision

2009: Dr Michael  Mulholland MD, PhD, the Frederick A. Coller Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair, Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan delivered  Grand Rounds in Nairobi at The Aga Khan Teaching Hospital on the 12th of November 2009.  He is the 4th Annual RJW Distinguished Professor and his talk entitled " Competency Based Surgical Training " was  very well received and has triggered the possibility of utilizing non-ACGME fellowship training positions to augment the training and experiences available to Aga Khan  surgical trainees. 

Dr. Mulholland received his Bachelor degree from the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and a medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Postgraduate training in General Surgery was received at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dr. Mulholland also received a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Mulholland joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in 1988.   Dr. Mulholland's clinical interests are expressed in the area of gastrointestinal surgery. He has a special expertise the treatment of pancreatic and biliary cancer, neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, biliary reconstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, and advanced laparoscopic surgery. He is a member of the Multidisciplinary Pancreatic Cancer Program of the University of Michigan Cancer Center.

Dr. Mulholland is the Principal Director of a research laboratory that has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1986. Research interests include neurocrine control of pancreatic exocrine secretion and hypothalamic control of food intake and energy expenditure. Dr. Mulholland is a member of numerous editorial boards and has been a member of study sections at the National Institution of Health. He serves as the editor of a major text book, Surgery: Scientific Principles and Practice. His accomplishments have been recognized by election to the Institute of Medicine.
